Two ways to install a Tukuk app
Tukuk web apps can become "real apps" through two doors. A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a shortcut your browser creates: an icon on the home screen, opening full-screen without an address bar. An APK is an Android installer file generated by our server and signed by Tukuk. The features overlap a lot — your only question is "which one?"
PWA — the easiest, all platforms
Choose PWA when you want the simplest way. On iPhone and Android it is the same: open the page, Add to Home Screen. The biggest advantage: automatic updates — we change the content on the server, you reopen it and the new version is already there; no file to download again. Because it is a browser, it passes without app-store approval. Its limits: access to certain device capabilities (e.g. motion sensors) is more restricted than native apps.
APK — for Android, more control
Choose APK when you are on Android and want something that stands as an installed app: its own icon & process, occasionally better performance/closer system access, and it can be shared as a file. On Tukuk, every APK is generated on-demand and uses one shared Tukuk signing key, so updates arrive locally (install over the old one, data safe). When installing from outside the Play Store you will see the "unknown sources" warning — normal, and we explain the steps on the blog.
So, which one?
- iPhone/iPad → PWA (APK does not run on iOS).
- Android, want easy & always up to date → PWA.
- Android, want the app file / full offline use / sharing → APK.
Good news: you do not have to choose forever. Try the PWA first; if you need the APK, it is just one ⬇ click in the store.
